If you have hard water and do not have a water softener you
should consider an Ion Exchange Filter to protect your
investment and extend the life of your machine. The Ion
Exchange filter softens the water at the source. The harder the
water and/or the more water you use and give out, the more
often you should run the E-Cleaner cleaning cartridge and
change the Ion Exchange filter.
If you want to remove more contaminants than the carbon filter
will that is built into the machine, you can get a pre-filter from
Enagic called the KDF filter. These external filters are sold
separately or together as a 3 stage filter combination
(sediment filter, KDF filter and ion exchange filter):
KDF and Ion Exchange together (or 3 stage filter) is $173
Ion Single Stage is $70, and /or Ion Exchange (or 2 stage filter
- similar to a water softener) is $103.

NOTE: 6A Michael Johnson researched solutions for
Hard Water and Well Water.
Hardness in the source water requires a unit to be cleaned
with the re-useable citrus cartridge once a week.
Enagic recommends a "Deep Cleaning" of the SD501 every 6
to 12 months in areas with hard water. This can be done by
shipping your unit to Enagic, by calling and setting it up
through the Service Department at 866-261-9500.
If your unit is not maintained, it will become clogged with
calcium, sooner or later.
Softening Hard Water
If someone has hard water they can soften the water. They
can do it with a whole house softener or at the tap where the
Kangen machine is.
There are two kinds of softening. One is the traditional salt or
potassium softener which is an ion exchange process, where
calcium and magnesium are removed from the water and
replaced with the salt or potassium. The other softening
methods are called Anti-scaling systems or salt free systems.
The two most accepted are the electrical nano pulsing
systems or the SP3 Filtersorb media. These methods, unlike
ion exchange, don't add to or take anything from the water,
but instead the calcium carbonate (hardness) is restructured
into nano crystals that are nuetral so they don't stick or scale,
are easily absorbed by the body and will also de-scale
existing hard water scale.
Ion exchange cartridges for at the tap solutions only last for
150 gallons, which is about one week for us, then they need
to be recharged or replaced. However, Filtersorb cartridges for
at the tap treatment lasts about one year, leaves the minerals
in and adds no salt. I use both.
I use the ion exchange cartridge to produce stronger waters
for demo purposes and to make batches of 2.5 & 11.5 to store
for personal use. It helps create 11.5 that emulsifies oil, 9.5
that will turn one tea bag into many cups & 2.5 pH water that
is very strong. I use the Filtersorb cartridge for my daily 9.5
drinking water.
Here is one way to get ion exchange cartridges that
works at the tap (versus whole house). The best choice is
Todays Water because it is a re-usable cartridge that has a lid
that can be taken off and on, allowing you to recharge or
replace the resin.
This is why I prefer the re-usable ion exchange cartridges from
Todays Water and only use them to produce 11.5 & 2.5 ph
water and 9.5 pH water for demos.
NOTE: Lloyd Sosa at Todays Water has one of the best
solutions for well water and hard water at the tap.
Either Filtersorb or Ion Exchange, which are both usually
whole house systems. This makes it more affordable for a new
Kangen machine owner, since whole house systems cost
more than at the tap treatment. So when some one has a
water issue they should contact Lloyd at:

SD501 - Hard Water Area
SD501 - If You Live in a Hard Water Area
If you live in the red zone (hard water) and you do not have a
water softener, you should use the reusable citrus cartridge
with E-Cleaner to clean your SD501 once a week.
Tip:...Pick a certain day of the week that works for you, and
clean your unit on that day or night every week.
Tip:... Run a gallon of the 5.5 Beauty Water every morning into
a large pitcher or a gallon jug. This will help to "sluff off" and
remove calcium & lime and other mineral buildup from the
titanium plates, as it reverses the polarity of the 230 watt
current on the plates. Your plants will love it!
Tip:... If you have hard water and do not have a water softener
you should consider an Ion Exchange Filter and Filtersorb
Cartridge to protect your investment and extend the life of
your machine. FOR DETAILS SEE BOTTOM OF PAGE.

Q&A
What About Reverse Osmosis?
If someone has a reverse osmosis unit, be aware that reverse
osmosis water is referred to by the Japanese as "dead water"
and it cannot be ionized. Reverse osmosis (RO) removes all
minerals from the water, and when a person drinks it regularly,
the body leaches calcium from the bones and teeth, which
results in weak teeth and bones. If I had a reverse water
system, I would remove it. Why have it? Americans have been
misinformed about reverse osmosis.
How often should I clean my machine with E-Cleaner if I
live in a hard-water area?
Enagic recommends you clean your machine every week with
the E-Cleaner. The more water you produce, the more often
you will have to clean your machine. Calcium is attracted to
our plates and tends to build up inside of the machine. If not
removed in a timely matter, your flow from your flex hose will
be restricted, and if left too long, you could ruin your plates.
Does Enagic offer any other solution for customers
whose machines are built up with calcium and water
will not run through?
If at any time your machines water flow is restricted or more
water is flowing from the gray hose than the flexible pipe, you
can send your machine in to the Service Department and have
it deep cleaned. Deep cleanings are NOT covered under your
warranty so you will be required to pay for the service and
shipping if necessary. Cost: $35.00 = $18 S&H SD501, DX,
DXII, SUN US, JRII and $70.00 Super 501. You will be sent a
loaner unit.

A water softener is recommended in a hard water area, such
as Texas, however, if that is not within your current budget,
